Martha Rosler: If You Lived Here

Currently housing crises are ramping up all over the world, as real estate speculation hunts down more and more new values to be created and exploited. As artists in an inner city area of Sydney this is affecting us badly. But we wonder what it is like for other low income families and communities who may not have the ‘surplus value’ that artists generate through their proximity to the city. Rosler’s exhibition in 1989 especially resonates for us now. We need to look at these examples as ways to critically engage and bring awareness to other artists about their complicity and location within displacement.
