The Librarium started out in 2009 as a modest effort to make a collection out of an accumulation of mainly DIY, punk, Indonesian and anarchist, and USA zines. It soon morphed into an expanded collection of small press publications, journals, essays, catalogues, articles, artist made ephemera (and teapots) in a cosy corner of the Bill+George studio, an artist run space in Redfern, Sydney.
Since Bill+George closed down in 2013, we have been in a holding pattern waiting for our new warehouse space to renovate itself. WATCH THIS SPACE. Meanwhile we occasionally go mobile.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ‘SMALL PRESS’?
Small press can be described in many ways, but simply is the name given to books which have a small distribution or print run or are published by an independent publishing house. SPUNC is an organisation based in Melbourne which is dedicated to promotion and support of small press. You can read a report they produced on small publishing in Australia here.
BUT WHY A SMALL PRESS LIBRARY?
The Librarium is our attempt to work with the restrictions of event based culture in Sydney and create a quiet space of contemplation and to engineer and spark ideas at the level of conversation. Equally important was our desire to start mapping our own independent cultural past and future and to connect to other spaces who are doing similar things. You can find links to these pages in the side bar.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Artists, researchers, creatives, thinkers, makers, and doers. People from the “community” (whoever that slippery term implicates) and anyone who needs a break from the computer and desires to hold hard copy in their hands, whilst sipping on a cup of tea. All in the toasty comfort of an inner west Sydney warehouse space.
WHAT DO WE HAVE?
A modest collection of carefully crafted words in books and pamphlets and dossiers, archived and acquired by our secret librarians club of secret librarians. We hold books that have been made by artists, books published by small press operators, journals from big name titles, and essays filed digitally on our network for you to access.
